Position Summary:

Boulder Creek Academy (BCA) is a premier 96-bed residential therapeutic boarding school nestled in the
beautiful Cabinet Mountains of Northern Idaho. We pride ourselves on developing and implementing individualized academic and emotional programming for students 13-18 years of age while also supporting families with developing and sustaining lifelong strategies for the school and home environment. The BCA mission is to empower students and families to achieve excellence in personal growth, relationships, and lifelong learning.

To support the BCA Learning Center, Boulder Creek Academy currently has an opening for a Special Education Teacher with an emphasis in literacy skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

• Provide reading services to assist students in the areas of phoneme sequencing, spelling, reading fluency, reading comprehension and other ancillary Learning Center programs  
• Proficient with a variety of research and evidence based programs addressing reading,  with a preference for a background with Lindamood-Bell program, V/V, spelling and vocabulary programs.
• Follow behavioral management plans, policies and procedures and report occurrences timely.
• Communicate student’s progress and challenges to Learning Center Coordinator and academic faculty.
• Participate fully in program rules, policies and expectations in dealing with students.
• Responsible for Company and personal Service Excellence Standards.

The successful candidate will receive training to be a reading clinician at BCA’s Learning Center using a variety of programs. The three major Lindamood-Bell programs we use are:  LiPS (Lindamood Phoneme Segmentation), Seeing Stars, and Visualizing/Verbalizing. Two other significant programs include the Stetson Spelling Program and an oral reading fluency program. The Center has many more programs available in its arsenal; you will be trained to use them as need arises. This is a wonderful opportunity to become trained in and gain experience with programs used in many private reading clinics.

Candidate will work from office located at Boulder Creek Academy in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Bonners Ferry is located approximately 30 miles north of Sandpoint, Idaho. Sandpoint was recently voted one of the five best small towns in America. (USAToday/RandMcNally)

  • Masters Degree in Special Education preferred.
  • Bachelors Degree in Education/Special Education required.
  • Teaching Certificate in Special Education Mild/Moderate K-12 required.
  • Preference for candidates with current Reading Specialist certification.
  • Proficient accuracy in phonemic awareness.
  • Demonstrated commitment towards quality education.
  • Knowledge of Multiple Intelligence theory and ability to deliver curriculum in multiple modalities.
  • Prior tutoring experience required. Experience tutoring “at-risk” youth preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of adolescent psychodynamics.
  • First Aid/CPR and Crisis Intervention Prevention (CPI) preferred at hire or within 90 days of hire.
  • General knowledge of workplace and office safety, including ergonomics and video display terminal.
  • Occasionally lift and carry medium weight, 25-50 lbs. 
  • Ability to touch, hear, see and speak corrected to normal range.
  • Regularly walk on uneven terrain such as rough, rocky, steep, muddy or snowy pathways.
