Wekiva Springs Center is a 130-bed acute behavioral health hospital providing quality care in a gender-specific program for men and women, Baker Act program and New Perspectives, an inpatient and outpatient program for Older Adults. We provide treatment for mental health, addictions and dual diagnosis concerns in a warm and caring atmosphere near I-95 and J Turner Butler in Southside area. The Recreational Therapist duties will include the following:

Assists in planning and conducting daily recreational therapy group sessions and programs, with individual sessions as needed in accordance with program structure and treatment plan

Shows evidence of adequate preparation for groups and individual sessions

Reports for groups and individual sessions in a timely manner

Conducts groups and individual sessions consistently with a minimal number of cancellations

Provides lesson plans or instructions when unavailable for groups

Shows an awareness for patients’ safety and takes steps to reduce the risk of injury

Adapts group and individual and goals to meet the needs of the patients

Maintains a consistent therapeutic milieu as outlined in program guidelines

Establishes and maintains an empathetic and therapeutic relationship with patients

Demonstrates adequate knowledge of normal and abnormal adolescent development in designing and implementing group and individual therapeutic interventions

Completes routine paperwork within the prescribed time frames that includes

Follows established charting guidelines for entries in the medical record

Progress notes reflect master treatment plan problem numbers

Attends designated team meetings and conferences. Contributes recreational therapy information and observations to interdisciplinary team members and physicians during appropriate treatment team staffing

Attends required meetings and is consistently on time

Contributes recreation therapy information to the treatment team

Communicates significant information, observations and incidences to appropriate team members as needed as they occur

Communicates problem areas and programming conflicts to the Activity Therapy Coordinator

Follows the program’s philosophy and guidelines to meet goals and objective of the hospital and the program

Conducts assessments with new patients  

Develops programs to meet the needs of patients

Follows the programs’ level system and unit rules consistently

Assists with recreational therapy program development

Reports ideas for improved programming the Activity Therapy Coordinator

Participates in programming meetings and interdepartmental in-services

Provides lists of current equipment needs to the Recreational Therapy Coordinator

Reports all employee and patient-related incidents/accidents pertaining to recreational therapy

Fills out incident reports completely and in a timely manner

Follows established safety policies and utilizes good judgment and awareness of safety issues to prevent incidents

Efficiently charts on individual progress notes and all pertinent observations and information

Charts consistently after each therapy session in a timely manner

Charts to problems identified on the treatment plan

Shares clinical observations and significant information using appropriate terminology

Charts on patients who do not attend groups and provides reasons for their absence

Charts special or unusual occurrences when necessary

Assists in ordering and maintaining recreational therapy supplies

Conducts and supervises the inspection an proper use of recreational therapy equipment

Makes routine inspections of exercise equipment and reports the need for service to the Activity Therapy Coordinator

Demonstrates knowledge of safety issues and proper use of equipment and supervises aides during use of equipment

Must be willing to work weekends and other times when needed


Qualified candidates must have the following:

1)  Must have a Bachelor's or Master's in Recreational Therapy, Art Therapy, Music/Drama Therapy.

2)  Certified Recreational Therapist (CTRS) or certification eligible

2)  Must be willing to work weekends, weekdays when needed and PRN

3)  Must be willing to work in a mental health environment
