Position Summary:

Job Summary:

  Perform responsible professional work in the evaluation and implementation of therapeutic recreation programs designed to increase, maintain or restore physical and mental health function as directed by the physician.  The individual is responsible for assisting patients in reaching their maximum performance levels in the areas of leisure, adaptive and recreational activities.  Responsible for working with a team in the delivery of care and participates in educational experiences for interns.


Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:



Reports important patient information to supervisor and treatment team as appropriate.

Implements activities schedule and tracks patient schedules to ensure service delivery.

Attends treatment team meetings, departmental meetings, supervision session, and other schedule staff meetings.

Completes documentation to include daily progress notes, discharge summaries, incident reports, inventory reports, purchase requisitions and work request.

Provides orientation for Patients to recreation therapy by conducting groups in recreational. Therapy, etc. as appropriate for the population served.

Develops curricula, activity ideas, and secures materials for assigned units.

Assesses patient leisure needs and develops behavioral treatment plans. Completes assessments within the first seventy- two (72) hours of patient’s stay.

Administered assessments appropriate for population served.

Attendance is satisfactory. (Greater than five occurrences of unexcused absences in a twelve month period is deemed chronic).

Is on time and at workstation by beginning of shift. (Greater than five occurrences of unexcused tardiest in a twelve- month period is deemed chronic).

Medical Records- defined as documents all required documentation in a timely and accurate fashion per regulatory and facility guidelines.

Adheres to dress code per facility policy.

Adheres to standards of hygiene and cleanliness requirements by displaying a neat and clean appearance at all times.

Displays on-going realization of Employer’s customer relations philosophy by respecting facility policy, maintaining confidentiality, and developing, courteous and professional relationships with clients, patients & co- workers.

Conducts timely group, exercises, good judgment and control and display emotional stability in meeting deadlines and in stressful situation.

Provides appropriate documentation and meets deadline on assigned tasks.

Maintains a safe environment and responds to emergency situations quickly and appropriately.

Reports situation that pose a potential danger to patients, clients and co-workers.

Participates in Fire Drills/ Safety Fairs as required.

Utilizes Safe Catch/ Maintenance Request form to report potential hazards in the work environment.

Therapies consistent with overall treatment goals.

Therapist demonstrates sound application of RT theory and methodology.

























Requires a bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy or related program.

Minimum 1 year experience.

Preference to applicants with experience working in the mental health field with adults, geriatrics, children and adolescents.

College level reading, writing, and math skills: assessment, evaluation, and interpretation skills; knowledge of psychiatric and addictive disease diagnoses and treatment’ flexibility; time management and organization skills; teaching or training skills helpful understanding of, or ability to understand, DSMIIIR methodology; inpatient psychiatric experience preferred. Willing to work flexible hours and willing to travel, including overnight, in work capacity; must exert self-control in volatile or hostile situations; able to respond well to deadlines; Bachelors’ degree in relevant field (e.g., recreational therapy, music therapy, art therapy, dance therapy, occupational therapy. Good oral and written communication skills. Must have or be eligible for a driver’s license in South Carolina. Must be knowledge of and abide by HIPPA regulations with regard to protect health information as defined by HIPPA and PSI. Uses and / or discloses on a daily basic verbal, written and / or electronic PHI in order to perform job duties, as pertains to (Clients’ Financial, Demographic, and / or Clinical Data) and / or Employees’ Financial, Demographic, and / or Clinical Data.
